Official Syllabus — Paper II, System Discipline
The System Paper II syllabus is built around core computer science, not applied IT. It spans ten sections and closely mirrors the structure of GATE Computer Science — including Engineering Mathematics, Theory of Computation and Compiler Design, which many candidates preparing from generic "IT Officer" material skip entirely.
Engineering Mathematics
Discrete Mathematics: Propositional and first order logic. Sets, relations, functions, partial orders and lattices. Monoids, groups. Graphs: connectivity, matching, colouring. Combinatorics: counting, recurrence relations, generating functions.
Linear Algebra: Matrices, determinants, system of linear equations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, LU decomposition.

Because CIL describes the syllabus as indicative and not exhaustive, an occasional question outside the ten sections is possible and general computer awareness is never wasted. Educational Qualification
To apply for the System discipline, you must hold one of the following:
Option A — Engineering Degree
1st Class BE / B.Tech / B.Sc (Engg.) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Information Technology
Option B — MCA Route
Any 1st Class Degree (any discipline) with a 1st Class MCA from a recognised university or institution
1st Class means a minimum of 60% aggregate across all semesters/years. For SC/ST/PwBD candidates the minimum is 55%. Rounding is not permitted — 59.99% is treated as ineligible.

Preparation Strategy — Built on the Official Syllabus

Theory of Computation and Compiler Design. Regular expressions and finite automata, CFGs and PDAs, the pumping lemma, Turing machines and undecidability; then lexical analysis, parsing, syntax-directed translation, runtime environments, intermediate code generation and data flow analysis. These two sections are where candidates from a generic IT-Officer background lose marks silently — and precisely because so many skip them, they are where a rank is won.
Phase 4 — Engineering Mathematics and Paper I (Weeks 11–12)
Engineering Mathematics is a full notified section and rewards revision more than discovery: discrete mathematics and logic, linear algebra, calculus, probability and statistics, and numerical methods. Run Paper I alongside it — current affairs from the last six months with attention to the coal and energy sector, reasoning, numerical ability and English.
