Paper Spotlight — DA

GATE DA 2027: The Fastest Growing Paper in GATE

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence was introduced in 2024 and has scaled faster than any paper in GATE's recent history. Registrations grew from 52,493 in DA 2024 to 91,764 in DA 2026, with 69,242 candidates appearing in 2026. If you are from CS, IT, ECE, EE, Mathematics or Statistics, DA is worth serious consideration — either as your primary paper or as the second paper in a two paper combination.

GATE DA 2027 Subject-Wise Weightage (based on 2021-2026 PYQ analysis)
  • Probability & Statistics + Machine Learning together account for roughly 40% of total marks. These two decide your rank.
  • Programming, Data Structures & Algorithms is the highest weighted single core subject at around 21 marks. Python is the only language tested.
  • Mathematics overall (Probability + Linear Algebra + Calculus & Optimization) is about 34 marks of the core.
  • Machine Learning + AI carry roughly 22 marks combined.

The PiyushAI GATE DA 2027 Course and Test Series covers all eight sections of the official syllabus with structured lectures, syllabus-mapped notes, topic-wise practice and full-length mocks. Taught by Piyush Wairale — M.Tech IIT Madras and former instructor at the IIT Madras BS Data Science Programme, with 10,000+ GATE DA students taught including AIR 2 rankers.

How to Register for GATE 2027 on GOAPS

Registration is entirely online through the GATE Online Application Processing System. Indian nationals register via DigiLocker this year.

  1. Visit the official GATE 2027 portal at gate2027.iitm.ac.in and open the GOAPS link.
  2. Indian nationals: complete DigiLocker-based registration with facial authentication. Other nationals: register with full name as per photo ID, valid email, mobile number and a password.
  3. Note the enrolment ID sent to your registered email, then log in.
  4. Fill personal, academic and communication details exactly as they appear on your documents.
  5. Select your test paper (and a second paper if you are opting for an approved combination) and your preferred exam cities.
  6. Upload photograph, signature, category certificate (if applicable), PwD certificate (if applicable) and valid photo ID in the prescribed formats.
  7. Pay the fee online via UPI, net banking, debit or credit card.
  8. Download and save the PDF copy of your submitted application for your records.

Common mistakes to avoid: entering a name that does not match your photo ID, uploading an out-of-spec photograph or signature, choosing the wrong paper code, and waiting until the last week to pay. The correction window (14–21 October 2026) allows edits, but some changes attract an additional fee.

GATE 2027 Syllabus Structure

Syllabi have been revised for GATE 2027. Download the PDF for your specific paper from the official site rather than reusing an older year's file.

General Aptitude (15 marks, all papers): Verbal aptitude, quantitative aptitude, analytical aptitude and spatial aptitude. This section is identical across every paper, which makes it the single highest-leverage block in your preparation.

Engineering Mathematics: Present in most engineering papers, typically carrying around 13 marks. Combined with General Aptitude, that is roughly 28 marks available before you touch a core subject.

Core subject section: The remaining marks come from your chosen paper's discipline-specific syllabus.

Sectional papers: XE candidates choose two optional sections of 35 marks each alongside compulsory Engineering Mathematics (15 marks). XL candidates choose two optional sections of 30 marks each alongside compulsory Chemistry (25 marks). XH candidates choose one optional subject of 60 marks alongside compulsory Reasoning and Comprehension (25 marks). Note that sectional codes have changed for GATE 2027.

What a GATE 2027 Score Gets You

Research and fellowship rolesDRDO, ISRO, BARC and CSIR labs consider GATE for select positions
International optionsSome universities in Singapore and Germany recognise GATE scores for postgraduate admission

GATE 2027 Preparation Strategy

You have roughly six months from the notification to the exam. Here is how to use them.

  • Start from the revised syllabus, not last year's. Download your paper's GATE 2027 PDF and mark every topic that has changed before you plan anything else.
  • Bank the 28 easy marks first. General Aptitude (15) and Engineering Mathematics (~13) are the highest return per hour in the entire paper, and they are the same content every year.
  • Let PYQ weightage drive your time allocation. Analyse the last 5–6 years of your paper, rank subjects by marks per year, and spend time in that order rather than in syllabus order.
  • Build a formula and revision sheet from day one. Writing it as you learn is far more effective than compiling it in January.
  • Attempt full-length mocks under real conditions. Three hours, no breaks, the virtual calculator only. The GATE calculator is slow; practising with it is a genuine skill.
  • Exploit the NAT rule. No negative marking on NAT means every single one should be attempted. For MCQs, apply an 80% confidence threshold before marking.
  • Consider a second paper seriously. If your syllabus overlaps meaningfully with another paper (CS with DA, EE or ME with RA), a second attempt in the same season doubles your admission and PSU options for a fraction of the extra effort.
  • Revise on a fixed cycle. Aim for at least three full revisions, with the last one in the final three weeks focused only on formula sheets, mistakes log and mocks.
