HAL Recruitment 2026: 120 Design Trainee & Management Trainee Posts

Who this recruitment is for

HAL has 20 production divisions, 10 R&D centres and one facilities management division spread across 7 states and 10 geographical locations. This drive fills engineering roles across both sides of that structure, and the two posts are genuinely different in character:

Posting locations: Bengaluru and Tumakuru (Karnataka), Hyderabad (Telangana), Nasik (Maharashtra), Koraput (Odisha), Barrackpore (West Bengal), and Lucknow, Kanpur and Korwa (Uttar Pradesh).

HAL 2026 vacancy breakdown by discipline and category

A total of 120 posts are on offer, split evenly between the two trainee streams. Note that these vacancies are inclusive of backlog vacancies — SC: 2, ST: 5 and OBC-NCL: 5.

Design Trainee — 60 vacancies

Management Trainee — 60 vacancies

Reservation for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)

Three vacancies are earmarked for PwBD candidates in Design Trainee (across all disciplines) and two in Management Trainee. Reservation is distributed among SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS and UR categories as per Government directives. Candidates with not less than 40% of the identified disability are eligible for the benefit, and must submit a Disability Certificate issued by the Competent Authority in the prescribed format.

Identified disability categories vary slightly by discipline. Hearing impairment (D, HH) and a range of locomotor disabilities (OA, OL, BL, OAL, CP, LC, Dw, AAV, SDD/SID, SD/SI) are identified across most disciplines, with visual impairment (B, LV) additionally identified for Computer Science under Management Trainee. Autism Spectrum Disorder (Mild) and Specific Learning Disability appear under Other Disabilities for several disciplines. Refer to the official notification for the exact discipline-wise matrix before applying.

OBC (NCL) certificate requirement

• The candidate must not belong to the Creamy Layer. OBC candidates in the Creamy Layer are not entitled to OBC-NCL relaxation and must indicate their category as UR in the online form.
• The caste and community name must appear in the Central List of Other Backward Classes.
• The Central OBC (NCL) certificate must be in the prescribed format and not older than 6 months as on 14.08.2026, to be produced at the interview stage.

For EWS candidates, the Income and Asset Certificate must be valid for financial year 2026-27 and prepared on the basis of income and asset verification for FY 2025-26.

Educational qualification for HAL DT and MT 2026

The core requirement is a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Technology, or its equivalent. HAL is specific about what "degree" means here: a regular, full-time degree acquired from a recognised University or Institution in the country under the 10+2+4 pattern, or 10+3+3 in the case of lateral entry into engineering courses.

Final year students

Yes, you can apply. Candidates currently in the final year or final semester of their B.E./B.Tech may apply provided they have already secured the prescribed aggregate percentage up to the last semester or year of examination at the time of applying. Selection remains subject to obtaining the minimum prescribed aggregate in the final degree, and documentary proof of having passed with the required aggregate must be produced at the interview, tentatively in September 2026.

Aggregate percentage of marks — the rule that disqualifies most applicants

How HAL computes this matters more than the number itself:

• Total marks obtained across all semesters or years are summed, and divided by the total maximum marks across all semesters or years.
• No rounding off is done. A 69.98% aggregate is not 70%. This single line eliminates a large number of otherwise strong candidates every year.
• No weightage is given to any particular semester or year — a strong final year does not compensate for weak early semesters.

Age limit and relaxations

The upper age limit is 28 years as on 14 August 2026 for UR and EWS candidates.

• Candidates from OBC-NCL, SC, ST or EWS who apply under the UR category will be treated on par with UR criteria — meaning no age or marks relaxation.
• After all applicable relaxations, age must not exceed 56 years for PwBD candidates and 55 years for others.
• Caste or tribe certificates must carry the date of issue, and the caste or tribe name must be spelled exactly as it appears in the relevant Central List notified by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Application fee and payment

How to apply for HAL Recruitment 2026, step by step

Applications are accepted online only, through the Careers section of www.hal-india.co.in, from 29 July 2026 (1400 hrs) to 14 August 2026 (1400 hrs). No other means or mode of application will be accepted.

Keep ready before you start

• A valid email ID that will stay active until the selection process ends — OTP-based registration uses it, and all further communication depends on it
• A soft copy of your latest passport-size colour photograph, in .jpg format and under 180 KB
• Aadhaar number and mobile number
• Semester-wise marks for your entire degree
• Employment details, if applicable

The five steps

1. Open the recruitment link. On the HAL website Careers section, click "SELECTION OF DESIGN TRAINEE/ MANAGEMENT TRAINEE – 2026" and select the post you want to apply for.
2. Register with your email. Enter and re-enter a valid email ID for OTP-based registration. This ID must remain active for the entire DT/MT selection cycle.
3. Fill eligibility details and upload your photograph. On submission, a unique Application Number is generated and you are taken to the Personal and Qualification details page. Eligibility details once submitted cannot be edited. Once the Application Number exists, you can log back in later to complete the rest.
4. Fill personal and qualification details. An Edit option is available before final submission. SC, ST, PwBD and internal candidates finish here and get the Application Confirmation page. UR, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates are redirected to the payment gateway.
5. Pay the fee (UR / OBC-NCL / EWS only). Pay ₹500 via credit card, internet banking or UPI. After a successful transaction you are redirected to the Application Confirmation page. Print and retain it.

Selection process

Selection has two stages: an online computer based test on an all-India basis, followed by a personal interview at Bengaluru.

Test centre preferences

You choose three cities as preferences in the online application form. No change of preference will be considered afterwards under any circumstance. HAL reserves the right to add or cancel any centre or city, allocate a different one, and reschedule the test date or venue. Indicating a preference does not entitle you to demand that centre.

ID proof at the test centre

You must produce one original identity card before the invigilator, failing which you will not be allowed to sit the test. Accepted: Voter ID, Driving Licence, Aadhaar Card, Passport, PAN Card, an ID card issued by Central or State Government or a PSU to its employees, an ID card issued by an authorised Government agency, or the College ID card of the institution last attended along with a copy duly attested by a Gazetted Officer.

Admit cards must be downloaded from the HAL website only — they will not be sent by post or email. Travel to the test centre is at the candidate's own expense.

Shortlisting and final merit

• Candidates are shortlisted for interview in the ratio of 1:5 to the number of vacancies in each discipline and category, on the basis of online test marks.
• All UR candidates of a discipline, along with SC, ST, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates of that discipline who do not avail any relaxation, are grouped together, arranged in descending merit, and called in a 1:5 ratio under UR.
• Reserved-category candidates not shortlisted under UR are regrouped into their own categories and called in a 1:5 ratio within those categories.
• The final merit list assigns 85% weightage to the online test and 15% to the interview.
• Candidates must secure at least 50% marks each in the written test and the interview to qualify, with relaxation for reserved categories as per rules.

After selection

Provisionally selected candidates, including PwBDs, undergo a pre-employment medical examination before joining. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory report from the Company's Doctor as per HAL's medical standards, and the doctor's decision is final and binding. No relaxation in health standards is allowed — read the Pre-Employment Medical Standards document hosted alongside the advertisement. Appointment is also subject to verification of caste, income and asset or disability certificates and of character and antecedents.

HAL DT / MT 2026 exam pattern

The online test runs for two and a half hours and consists entirely of multiple-choice questions, in three parts.

• The test can be taken in Hindi or English. You declare your language choice while applying, and it cannot be changed afterwards.
• Average pace works out to roughly 56 seconds per question — this is a speed paper, not a deliberation paper.
• The notification does not specify marks per question or a negative marking scheme for the online test. Treat the scheme as unconfirmed until HAL publishes it in the FAQs or on the admit card, and plan your attempt strategy on test day accordingly.

What to study for each section

HAL does not publish a detailed syllabus in the notification. The reliable approach, based on how PSU trainee papers of this format are set, is to work from the standard undergraduate curriculum of your discipline and the GATE syllabus for the same branch.

Part II — English & Reasoning (40 questions)

English: reading comprehension, cloze test, error spotting, sentence improvement, para-jumbles, fill in the blanks, synonyms and antonyms, idioms and phrases.
Reasoning: seating arrangement and puzzles, syllogism, blood relations, coding-decoding, direction sense, series, statement and assumption, inequality, data sufficiency, order and ranking.

Part I — General Awareness (20 questions)

Current affairs of the last 6–8 months, defence and aerospace news (HAL's own programmes, DRDO, ISRO missions, indigenous platforms), Indian polity and constitution, economy and budget basics, science and technology, static GK including awards, sports and important days, and PSU and Ministry of Defence developments.

Salary, training, bond and postings

During training

Selected candidates undergo a 52-week training programme covering various modules, including theoretical and on-the-job training at various places. During this period trainees draw a stipend comprising basic pay of ₹50,000 per month, plus Variable Dearness Allowance and Canteen Allowance. Bachelor accommodation is also admissible during training, as per company rules.

After absorption

On successful completion of training, trainees are absorbed as Engineers in the Grade-II scale of pay of ₹50,000 – ₹1,60,000. On absorption, the officer becomes eligible for basic pay, Variable Dearness Allowance, other perks and allowances under the cafeteria system, company accommodation or House Rent Allowance, Performance Related Pay (variable pay), medical facilities, Provident Fund, gratuity and other superannuation benefits, as per company rules applicable from time to time.

HAL Recruitment 2026 important dates

This is HAL's tentative schedule. Exact dates and any changes will be informed on completion of each stage of selection. Any corrigendum or addendum will be issued on the HAL website only.

Mistakes that get HAL applications rejected

Most rejections in PSU recruitment are administrative, not academic. These are the specific traps in this notification:

1. Applying for both DT and MT. Submitting online applications for more than one post — for example MT (Mechanical) and DT (Mechanical) — leads to rejection of the candidature, and any fee paid is forfeited. Pick one.
2. Rounding your aggregate up. 69.6% is not 70%. HAL does no rounding.
3. Assuming your branch counts. If the exact branch name is not in the eligible list, you are not eligible, however close the syllabus is.
4. Entering diploma marks instead of degree marks. Diploma-plus-degree holders must enter engineering degree marks as qualifying marks.
5. Choosing the wrong category. Category (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwBD/EWS/UR) once filled cannot be changed, and no benefit of another category will be admissible later.
6. Submitting eligibility details carelessly in Step 3. Eligibility details cannot be edited once submitted.
7. A stale OBC-NCL certificate. It must be not older than 6 months as on 14.08.2026.
8. Forgetting the NOC. Candidates employed in Government, Semi-Government, PSU, Quasi-Government or Autonomous Bodies — including those on contract — must produce a No Objection Certificate from their employer at the interview, failing which they will not be permitted to appear and will not be eligible for travelling allowance.
9. Missing the Conversion Certificate. CGPA holders need one from the university or institute at the interview.
10. Leaving payment to the last hour. Incomplete applications are rejected without further reference.

A five-week preparation plan

From application close on 14 August to the test on 5–6 September, you have roughly five weeks. Here is how I would allocate them, given that 62.5% of the paper is technical and the merit list weights the test at 85%.

Three things that decide this paper

• Speed over depth. 160 questions in 150 minutes means you cannot linger. Practise skipping fast and returning, rather than fighting a single question.
• Breadth of technical coverage. With 100 discipline questions spread across the whole undergraduate syllabus, three deeply-mastered subjects will not carry you. Wide, reliable coverage beats narrow excellence here.
• Start interview preparation on the day of the test, not after the result. Results come out 10 September and interviews start 21 September — that is under two weeks. Know HAL's divisions, platforms and your own final-year project cold.
