How to prepare for GATE DA exam by Paras Chopra by AIR 2

Hi folks.

I am Paras Chopra (AIR-2 GATE DA), and here I am sharing the resources that helped me prepare for the exam. Before we begin, let me give you a brief overview of my background : I hold a B.Tech degree in EE and have 3 years of work exp.

I left my job to prepare for UPSC and later for the GATE exam. My GATE DA preparation took around 7 months but I must confess that I had a strong background in Maths even before starting my prep. I have also taught Calculus and Statistics to students to earn a side-income, and you can find some of those lecture slides and videos below.

Additionally, I would like to thank Piyush Wairale sir, whose courses helped me to cover the DBMS & Warehouses and AI portion of the syllabus in a short time. Now let’s move on to the resources:

#1 : Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms

 ● Lectures by Prof. Sriram Sankaranarayanan on Coursera: Course#1 : Algorithms for Searching, Sorting, and Indexing Course#2 : Trees and Graphs: Basics

 ● My notes from the above course : DSA notes

● Online course by Piyush Wairale : https://www.piyushwairale.com/

 ● Additional resource : DSA book- you can find free pdf online

#2 : Database Management and Warehousing:

● Online course by Piyush Wairale : https://www.piyushwairale.com/

 ● Lectures by Prof. Di Wu on Coursera: Course#1 : Relational Database Design Course#2 : SQL

 ● Notes from above courses: DBMS notes

 ● Reference books : Not necessary (above materials are sufficient for GATE)

 #3 : Machine Learning

 ● Stanford University Machine learning course : Andrew Ng Machine Learning ● Statistical Learning course by Trevor Hastie, Rob Tibshirani : ISLP (Study only those topics relevant to the syllabus)

 ● Notes from above courses: ISLP course slides ● Reference books : Not necessary (above materials are sufficient for GATE)

 #4 : Artificial Intelligence:

  ● Piyush Wairale AI online course : www.piyushwairale.com

 ● All questions in this year’s paper could be solved from the above course. Nothing more is needed.

 ● Notes from the above course: AI notes

 #5 : Linear Algebra

 ● Linear Algebra course by Prof. Gilbert Strang MIT : LA Gilbert Strang (Lecture 11, 12 and the last five lectures are not in syllabus and can be skipped)

 ● Notes from the above course : MIT OCW Lin.Alg notes

 ● Practice problems from the course page or Prof. Strang’s textbook.

#6 : Calculus: If you 11th and 12th Maths is strong enough then Piyush Wairale Course is sufficient, it covers everything.

#7 : Probability and Statistics: I had taught Statistics to a student preparing for the AP exam and found the textbook “The Practice Of Statistics 5th Edition - Daren Starnes” excellent. For those having sufficient time, I would suggest using this textbook for the GATE DA exam. Lecture notes for the same can be found here : Statistics Lecture Notes
